Beyonce S&Ming

My thoughts: Beyonce+S&M undertone+Remix= a very happy gay juan!

But seriously, Beyonce is getting all S&Med out in this video. Ballerina heels, "code words," and lusty leather outfits? Hm... For one, ballerina heels are painful; usually, people either sit or use a cane to get around in them and as you'll see, Beyonce just works those things. Who knew that Beyonce had a kinky leather side? Endless nights of debauchery anyone? :)
If you all can't access it from the link below just type in "Beyonce" and "Greenlight" and watch the video on youtube. enjoy!

I rent this movie by Adam Sandler this weekend.
It was really fun to me, but I am wondering if we can critisize this movie with queer eyes or not.
If some of you have seen this movie before, please comment your reviews.

A Shot at Queer Love?

Has anyone seen the show "A Shot at Love with Tia Tequila?" I've watched it a few times, and I just don't know what to make of it...

The first time I saw it, I thought, "oh, great, here we go. Here's a hypersexualized woman playing bisexual for a heterosexual male gaze. This is another typical porn lesbian/bi representation..." But, the more I watch it, the more I wonder if it has possibilities for subversive representations.

Amongst the contestants competing for Tia's attention is a very butch, perhaps trans lesbian, Dani. When I was first started watching, I was weary of how she'd be represented and I thought she'd be eliminated immediately. But, she's actually stuck around for a while and has been depicted really positively. She's portrayed as intelligent, sincere, kind, and friendly. And, even though Tia has made it clear that she's usually not attracted to butchy girls, she seems to like Dani...

I ramble on about this because this otherwise trashy show is significant in portraying a butch lesbian. This is a show for mainstream audiences, yet pretty queer in content... However, it remains to be seen whether she'll pick a boy or a girl. I'd be willing to bet Dani doesn't win the show, guess we'll have to see...

Hedwig and the Angry

I found a clip of the ending of the film on Youtube, for those of you who didn't get to see it.

The last few seconds or so of the film are missing, so what happens is: Hedwig walks down the street, stops at the mouth of the alley, looks both ways, and continues moving forwards.

Also, here's the link to the Popmatters'>http://www.popmatters.com/film/interviews/mitchell-john-cameron.shtml">Popmatters interview with John Cameron Mitchell. Mitchell discusses his views on Yitzhak and Hedwig's gender identity journeys, as well as the Origin of Love myth. One of the things that I really liked is that Mitchell and Stephen Trask (who wrote the music and lyrics) took the idea of man and woman being as "one flesh" (the Adam and Eve myth) and went back further in our cultural myths to find a more inclusive origin of love.

Today's Discussion

Hey everyone,

I'd like to continue on today's discussion since we ran short on time.
The last thing we were talking about was the 80's and the rise of fundamentalism. In the 70's, we saw the rise of the "gay male clone," while in th 80's we saw an outburst of queerness and overall craziness in pop culture. The beginning of the 80's marked the beginning of the documented HIV/AIDS crisis and the rise of Christian / conservative fundamentalism.
Now we are seeing a second raise of Christian fundamentalism, and a lower activism among LGBTQ youth. Any thoughts?

Community

So this weekend I went up to Arizona to see my partner. I go every few weeks, and everytime I do, it's always a culture shock. She's living in Mesa, Arizona this year, and let's just say it's a pretty conservative place. It's considered a good weekend when we don't get stares or a homophobic comment. That almost never happens. This weekend we got a passing "fag" comment. No matter how many times it happens, it's always infuriating, shocking, and hurtful. It's just been a while since we've been in a place where our sexuality was really questioned. We lived in Ann Arbor before, and had a great, really supportive community. Being a lesbian just wasn't an issue.

In attempts to find community in Arizona, we went to a lesbian bar with the other two semi-out lesbians at her school. While the bar was actually decent, going out with them was a-w-k-w-a-r-d- They didn't like to dance, made fun of everyone, didn't really talk, wanted to sit in a corner and sulk. Just not our scene.

I miss having a community where I belonged. Since moving to L.A., I feel like an alien, without a home. I think once you have a taste of what it feels like to find chosen family, it's really hard to go without it. I guess time will tell, it's only been a few months. I definately think being queer makes adapting to any new place rough. I also think every queer community is different, and maybe finding the perfect one for you hardly ever happens. I guess we'll see.

Film Soiree Screening of “Ma Vie en Rose”
6pm in Leavey Auditorium

"Ma Vie en Rose" ("My Life In Pink") is the story of Ludovic, a little girl born in a little boy's body. For him, nothing is more natural than to change his gender. As a hopeful and sensitive child, he truly believes that a miracle is going to happen. He will be a girl, no doubt about it, and he's in love with Jerome, his school mate, and son of his father's colleague. Initially a source of amusement, an outrage begins in their suburb when the two boys are discovered pretending to get married. The family begins to realize with horror that his desire to be a girl isn't just a little boy's fantasy. They try to make him change his mind, to no avail. The situation turns into a real-life drama of intense reactions from neighbors, friends, and teachers, resulting in a profoundly optimistic ending.

GLBTA presents Katz from Athens Boys Choir
8pm at Parkside Performance Space

Free Frozen Yogurt from Tropics!

Ok, so the name Athens Boys Choir can be a bit deceiving but you can't blame a Transsexual man living in the Deep South for having a sense of humor about the whole ordeal. So Katz, the Choir's now solo member, travels the country speaking "the good word" throwing down hard hitting spoken-word that deals with issues of Gender, Politics, Love, Sex, and everything in-between.
Katz's spoken-word is raw, unapologetic, witty, and soulful. As Out Magazine wrote in 2006, "Katz avoids falling into the common spoken-word trap... and instead uses engaging wordplay, razor-sharp wit, and hip-hop rhythms." He has had the honor of sharing the stage with such artists as Ani Difranco, Indigo Girls, Bitch, The Butchies, Danielle Howle, and Michelle Malone. He has also opened for poets of HBO's Def Poetry Jam on more than one occasion.
Being a out Transsexual, Katz's spoken-word often becomes a platform for education and activism, but all work and no play makes for one intense performance so he lets loose with sarcasm, pop culture references, and video's featuring Barbara Streisand as Yentl and sassy footwork by the stars of the 1979 hit "Roller Boogie."

editorial on the Michael Sandy MURDER: my comments/ questions on the article: "when is a hate crime not a hate crime" from NYmag.com

I met Michael Sandy when i was living in New York, he was close with a group of boys i knew (and still know very well) that all went to F.I.T. (fashion institute of technology, or fags in training, which ever makes you more comfortable). On a very personal and sad note, this article from NYmag.com: When Is a Hate Crime Not a Hate Crime? discusses the Michael Sandy murder from last year (Oct. 2006) and questions if the validity of this particular hate crime.

NYmag.com writes that, "everything changed in court in September, when the lawyer for the alleged ringleader, Anthony Fortunato, announced in his opening statement that his client couldn’t be guilty of a gay hate crime because he, too, was secretly gay." WHAT? when did secretly being gay mean you can get away with murder?

"Was Anthony Fortunato really gay, or was this just a ploy to undermine the D.A.’s case?"
Honestly, does anyone really care if he was "really gay" or kinda gay, a little gay, had a gay thought once, saw a gay porn and kinda liked it... etc.?

" If he was telling the truth, is a gay man even capable of committing a gay hate crime?"
This must be comedy. I don't think i can even respond to this question... anyone want to respond for me?

"And what, at the end of the day, is a hate crime, anyway?"
This is a valid question that obviously needs to be addressed. From my opinion, "hate" is what defines a "hate crime". If "being gay" or "not being gay" defined a "hate" crime, then it might be called a "gay or not gay crime".

AND WHAT THE @#$% is this all about:
"(Race was never a serious factor in the case, despite the fact that the victim was black and the alleged perpetrators were white.)" Yeah. I'm SURE.

grrr. GRRRRRRRR.

Stuff

Hello :) I just wanted to let everyone know that every once in awhile on PBS, and I think I also saw it on LOGO, is this show called, "In the Life" about the history of the gay community. I think that it is different everytime, not a repeat. It's an hour long. Also...there is this movie called, "Soldier's Girl" that I watched awhile back. It is about this transgender girl who falls for a military man and it's based on a true story...it's a good movie and will leave a lasting impression on you.

Julie Johnson (2006)

http://youtube.com/watch?v=U6dBFe__Ww0

I saw this movie at the beginning of this quarter, and it was my first time to see a movie with my queer eyes.
This movie shows some struggles of Julie Johnson, who fell in love with her female friend.
For me who does not have any experience about films or LGBTS, the movie tells a lot.
Please see this if you are interested!!

Legally Blonde: The Musical

Tonight I was watching the Legally Blonde musical on MTV, and there's a whole number about trying to identify a character as gay or European. Luckily I found it on YouTube.

is it a universal genderqueer thing to have trouble with friends?

insomnia.

i go a little crazy when i don't sleep
i suffer from chronic pain and the pain is worse when i don't sleep

but that gets me really thinking
which challenges the part of my mind that was damaged from my suicide attempt 7 years ago
carbon monoxide poisoning that caused severe brain injury

anyways,
when i don't sleep i end up thinking a lot and tugging on fusion between the central hemispheres of my brain because i am creating synapses, thoughts, brain cell expansion on the right side of my brain

so i can hear musical notes again and i want to paint and dance and make music

i've never had a best friend
or perhaps i've never felt i had a best friend

Does anyone else have trouble with lasting fulfilling friends?
Do you think it has anything to do with being queer?

this thing saves automatically?! that's fucking great
i like to collaborate on ideas

and hugs

THE DSM on Homosexuality

204: 81 Words

The story of how the American Psychiatric Association decided in 1973 that homosexuality was no longer a mental illness.

To access this audio story go to: http://www.thislife.org/Radio_Episode.aspx?episode=204
and click on "full episode" in the left hand column next to the words "act one".

"In 1973, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) declared that homosexuality was not a disease simply by changing the 81-word definition of sexual deviance in its own reference manual. It was a change that attracted a lot of attention at the time, but the story of what led up to that change is one that we hear today, from reporter Alix Spiegel. Part one of Alix's story details the activities of a closeted group of gay psychiatrists within the APA who met in secret and called themselves the GAYPA ... and another, even more secret group of gay psychiatrists among the political echelons of the APA. Alix's own grandfather was among these psychiatrists, and the president-elect of the APA at the time of the change. (24 minutes)"
